Accessibility statement

An interactive picture that only works with a mouse is broken. This is what we do about it, and where we have not got to yet.

For people reading a published page

  • Every region is reachable with the keyboard. Tab moves between them, Enter opens one, and Escape closes what is open. Regions drawn by the artwork itself, like the countries on a map, have a control of their own so they are reachable too.
  • Focus follows the picture. Tab order runs in reading order - rows, then left to right - not in the order regions happened to be drawn.
  • The focus ring is always visible. It is built in three bands so that it reaches at least 4.04:1 against any colour a creator chooses; a test sweeps the whole range of colours to prove it.
  • Every region has a name that a screen reader announces, and optionally a list of every region beside the picture, searchable on maps and diagrams.
  • A modal popup behaves like one. The spotlight style moves focus inside, keeps it there, and returns it to the region when closed - and it never opens on hover or focus alone.
  • Motion is a preference. Reduced-motion settings stop animations and pulsing markers.
  • Zoom without a mouse. The zoom in, zoom out and fit buttons work from the keyboard, and a pinch works on a touch screen.

For people making one

  • Checked before publishing. The editor names regions with no label, targets too small to press reliably, and links with no address, and will not publish until they are fixed.
  • Readable editor. The editor’s panels were measured in both the light and the dark theme, with no text below 4.5:1 contrast.
  • Keyboard shortcuts for every tool, with selected regions moved and nudged by the arrow keys. Press ? in the editor for the full list.

Known limits

  • Drawing a new region needs a pointer - a mouse, a trackpad or a pen. Moving a region, naming it and publishing work from the keyboard.
  • The quality of what a reader hears depends on what the author wrote. We check that every region has a name; we cannot check that the name is a good one.
  • Pictures in galleries carry the author’s captions, which are not always written as alternative text.
  • It has not been independently audited. We design to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 at level AA and test against them ourselves.

Tell us what is not working

If something on a published page or in the editor does not work with the way you use the web, write to support@guidedvisual.com. Say what you were trying to do and what you use - a screen reader, magnification, a switch - and we will treat it as a fault, not a feature request. See also the help centre.
