Entrance hall and audio guides
Stop 1 of 9. Collect a guide from the desk; the tour takes about fifty minutes. The cloakroom is under the stair.
A numbered tour through seven galleries, each opening the paintings that hang in it.
The same content as the picture, as text: every part and what it says when you open it.
Stop 1 of 9. Collect a guide from the desk; the tour takes about fifty minutes. The cloakroom is under the stair.
Stop 9 of 9. Prints of every work on the tour, books and the catalogue. Leave by the door to the hall.
Stop 2 of 9. Oil paint arrived in the Low Countries first, and with it a kind of looking that could count the hairs on a dog. Start with the mirror in the Arnolfini room: it shows two people nobody has ever identified.
Stop 3 of 9. Two ways of making a figure: Botticelli by line, Leonardo by shadow. Stand back from the Mona Lisa and the edges of her face disappear on purpose.
Stop 4 of 9. Light from a window on the left, in two small Vermeers, and a whole company caught mid-march in Rembrandt's largest canvas. Find the girl in gold in The Night Watch — she is the brightest thing in it.
Stop 5 of 9. Woodblock prints, made in thousands and sold for the price of a bowl of noodles. The plum tree in Hiroshige's garden is the one Van Gogh copied in oil, two rooms from here.
Stop 6 of 9. The painting that gave Impressionism its name — a critic meant it as an insult — and, thirty years on, the pond Monet dug so he would have something to paint.
Stop 7 of 9. Painted in Arles and then Saint-Rémy, a little more than a year apart. The sunflowers were painted to decorate a room for a friend; the night sky was painted from memory, by day.
Stop 8 of 9. Seurat built a Sunday afternoon out of dots over two years; Munch made a feeling into a place. The tour ends here, and the shop is through the door on the left.
